Traditional gathering and havesting of kai

Kai is the Maori word for food.The maori diet was based on birds and fish .The maori never cooked in the same place as they slept.In traditional hangi cooking, with meat and vegetables cooked in a hole in the ground. With hot stones on the bottom of the hole , the food is covered with cloth and a pile of earth entrap the heat all over the kai.Maori also continue to catch eels in fresh water , fish gather shell fish and kina.
